Oral Cancer Screening

Early Detection

Oral cancer is one of the most common — and most survivable — cancers when detected early. The five-year survival rate for early-stage oral cancer is over 80%. At 124 Street Dental, a thorough oral cancer screening is included as part of every routine examination. It takes only a few minutes and could save your life.

What to Expect

How It Works

1

Visual Examination

Dr. Basi carefully examines all soft tissues in the mouth: lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of mouth, palate, and throat for any unusual changes in colour, texture, or form.

2

Manual Palpation

We feel the lymph nodes in your neck and jaw for any swelling or unusual firmness, and palpate the floor of the mouth and tongue.

3

Enhanced Lighting if Needed

For any areas of concern, enhanced lighting tools help identify abnormalities that may not be visible under standard light.

4

Documentation & Follow-Up

Anything unusual is photographed and documented. We monitor it over time and refer to an oral surgeon for biopsy if indicated.

Common Questions

Oral Cancer Screening FAQs

Q.Who is at risk for oral cancer?

Tobacco and alcohol use are the strongest risk factors. However, HPV infection has become a leading cause especially in younger non-smokers. Everyone benefits from routine screening.

Q.What does oral cancer look like?

Early signs can include red or white patches, ulcers that don't heal, lumps, rough patches, or persistent numbness. Many early lesions are asymptomatic — which is why screening matters.

Q.Is the screening painful?

Not at all. The visual exam and palpation are gentle and take just a few minutes as part of your regular checkup.

Q.What happens if something suspicious is found?

Dr. Basi will monitor the area and, if it doesn't resolve within 2 weeks, refer you to an oral surgeon for evaluation and possible biopsy. Early referral is always the right approach.
